]]>ZENESCOPE INTERVIEWS Amber Curtis
How do you survive sitting down with Jason Voorhees?
Wait for a pandemic, tell his agent it’s safer to not chat in person (they’ll assume it’s because of the pandemic, but you’ll know it’s because he’s killed over 150 people) and then schedule a zoom interview.
Zenescope’s Amber Curtis interviewed iconic stuntman and legendary horror icon, Kane Hodder about his recent announcement, his time as Jason Voorhees, and who would win in a fight: Jason or Victor Crowley.
Here is an excerpt from the interview:
(You can view the entire interview here)
Amber: I know it was announced yesterday by Bloody Disgusting that your biography book unmasked is getting a re-release for its 10th Anniversary. Could you talk a little bit about unmasked and what the new re-release will have in addition to the past book?
Kane: First of all, it's been 10 years. I can't even hardly believe that. Since the book came out, there's 10 more years of new stories, but then also so many other important things for me.
The reporter that was with me the day I got burned has never shared her side of the story and she's finally going to. I think it was very difficult for her that day just to watch what happened to me. I have never heard her side of it and I actually don't want to know it until the book is actually out and I read it for myself because it's just going to be such a unique perspective.
Everyone knows my story and how bad it was, but nobody knows how it felt to be there witnessing that story, so that's a big part of it that's going to be in the book.
A lot of pictures that have never been seen by fans and stuff behind the scenes shots on films and other things.
Incredibly personal stories of people that read the book and related to certain things, certain ways and a lot of people say hearing my story helped them through something difficult. Something I came across a few years ago, that I forgot I even had, was that I did a day-to-day journal of shooting Jason X.
Amber: Oh cool
Kane: And every day after when I would get back to my apartment, I would write down what happened that day. We're gonna publish that in the new book.
We're using the original title that we first had come up with for the book we were going to call it Kill and then we thought, “Eh it's not really descriptive of what the story is, so that's why we did Unmasked.”
This new release edition will be called Kill with the original cover and everything. Everybody knows that that's tattooed in my mouth and it's my word I use it in business things. It's on my license plate, so it'll be kind of fun to get back to that original title.
Amber: So you're saying that I could potentially find you anywhere driving on the road if I see someone's license plate says kill it's probably you
Kane: Well yes, but you know I couldn't..California law wouldn't allow me just to put that word on my plate so I had to have some letters in between the kill so that they didn't realize what I was really doing you know.
Amber: So speaking of bizarre, [to promote] Part VIII, you were on the Arsenio Hall Show, dressed as Jason [Voorhees]. How did that happen?
Kane: They contacted us from the Arsenio Hall Show saying that Arsenio was always kind of a closeted horror fan in a way. He didn't really advertise it, but he liked that stuff, he liked the character, and he thought it would be funny as hell to have me on as Jason and interview me like I'm any other actor.
And of course, I'm not going to respond because [Jason Voorhees’] don't talk and that was the whole point of it. He made it funny, but before I got in the costume, he said, “I know this is going to sound stupid, but please don't f*** with me when you're in the costume because I'm really nervous.” And anyone that knows me, knows that if you tell me please don't f*** with me, That's exactly what i'm gonna do.
So at the end where he goes to shake my hand, if you ever watch the clip again, I grab his hand and pull him towards me and you can see that he's actually scared. But yeah it was a lot of fun because you don't get those opportunities playing this kind of character very often you know?
Amber: So before we let you go we always do rapid fire and it's just gonna be five questions. The first answer that pops into your mind is gonna be the answer. So [if] fail, there are dire consequences.
Kane: But if I do fail that you'll probably end up my victim so just just be aware
Amber: *blocks my door really quickly*
Kane: Please, have you seen people lock doors in front of me before and it didn't do much did it?
Amber: Well maybe I have supernatural powers you don't know about so...
Kane: Okay, fine.
Amber: Okay, so what is your most commonly asked fan question?
Kane: “Did you like playing Jason?” I guess.. I mean, you know, I guess I can
See why somebody would ask that but maybe other actors just have played a role for the money or something, but yes I did love playing the character.
Amber: Who would win in a fight Jason Voorhees or Victor Crawley?
Kane: Oh that's a good one! I would give a very slight edge...very slight.. to Victor. Only because he is less predictable. With Jason, you may know exactly what he's going to do and you still can't do sh** to stop it, but you might have a better chance eventually of doing something that's effective to stop him. Victor is so unpredictable that I don't know if he could ever do that.
Amber: Oh good answer!
Who is your favorite final girl?
Kane: Oh man, I don't think anybody's ever asked me that. Oh, I'd have to say... and it doesn't have to be a Jason movie right?
Amber: Nope.
Kane: Danielle Harris as Mary Beth in the Hatchet movies was just amazing. She's a very good friend of mine, we're very close. I just think she's such a talented actress and so good with so many aspects of acting including physical stuff. She's definitely my favorite.
Amber: Yeah she's really really great. I love her and everything that she does. Halloween IV and V are very underrated films and her performance is fantastic, so i'm glad to hear you say that.
Well who would be your favorite final girl in the Friday the 13th that you are battling?
Kane: Probably Laura because she's like I said before the only one that ever had a decent effect in battling Jason so Tina in part VII.
Amber: If this were your last meal and you were on death row, what would it be?
Kane: Well it's gonna sound pretty weird, but a peanut butter sandwich.
Amber: Peanut butter? Crunchy? Smooth?
Kane: Smooth.
Amber: Smooth. Wow, [you] made a face at crunchy. Good to know
Kane Hodder has over 100 stuntman and actor credits including the Friday the 13th film series, the Hatchet series, and Se7en. His best selling book Unmasked is getting a 10th anniversary re-release called Kill with more interviews, behind the scenes intel, and a first hand account from the woman who reported on his almost fatal stunt.

]]>ZENESCOPE INTERVIEWS Amber Curtis
Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake has sparked debate amongst Michael Myer’s fans. It’s a “love it or hate it” type of film. One thing we can all agree on: Tyler Mane’s portrayal was intimidating. Standing at staggering 6’9, who would even have a chance at survival.
But apparently the film was only made if Tyler agreed to the project?
Here is an excerpt from the interview featuring Zenescope Co-Founder Ralph Tedesco and Host Chris Samson. You can view the entire interview here:
Ralph: The characters you’ve done in costume...the physicality of an acting performance is underrated and an underrated talent. How do you prepare for a role like Michael Myers? Where the main protagonist isn't really talking at all and has to wear a mask so you can't really portray emotion?
Tyler: You just have to go off your physicality, like in the beginning in the asylum [scene]. It's all through your body language. I was more slouched over, I was shuffling and dragging. As I got closer to what the character looks like, [I became] full on Michael Myers with the head tilts and all the badass stuff.
It's funny cause the editor thought that there were about 6 different masks, expression-wise. [The body language is] through the eyes and the way you tilt your head. He said, “Did you guys have several different masks?” It was [just] one mask.
Ralph: Oh right!
Tyler: Yeah. He was reading the emotion as he was editing it through, which was kinda cool.
Chris: As tedious as the makeup chair is, did being in costume allow you to get into character a little more easily? Not just for sabre tooth but for Michael Myers or any other roles that you've done?
Tyler: The Michael Myers character is iconic and once you put on the coveralls, slip on the mask, hand you that knife, you’re in character. You're just right there and it's go time. It's just fantastic being part of that and everybody through [both films] have just become close family.
It’s just a fantastic thing to be a part of it.
Ralph: Well you probably grew up, as I did, an original Halloween fan.
Tyler: I had seen the original one.
Ralph: I would imagine just a little bit was like, “Wow I'm playing an iconic role now.” That's a pretty cool feeling.
Tyler: It wasn't just one [time]. There were several of them. Several different people played the part and I’m [one of them].
That's the thing. When I went into it, I wanted to figure out how to make it a little more than a one dimensional character, like he [always had been portrayed]. They call him “The Shape” and he’s just one dimensional.
Rob explained it by showing how he's a product of his environment and the backstory of Michael Myers and how he got to where he is. That’s the cool part of [the remake].
Ralph: Yeah, definitely.
Chris: We’re a comic book company that specializes in horror and dark fantasy. Aside from Halloween, you're also a part of the cast for Devil's Rejects, which is a very, very beloved cult classic in the horror genre. In working in all of these genres, which ones did you find the most exciting and which ones do you find the most challenging?
Tyler: You approach them all differently. But going back to the Devil’s Rejects, I originally auditioned for a different role and I was like, “Ehh” because I wasn't right for that role. Why am I even reading this?
Then I got a call about a week later and they said, “Well we want you to be in the movie and we want you to take over Rufu’s role.” I said, “I was just happy to be getting a gig and went on and filmed for about 4 days. Off [that role] and meeting Rob, he [then] wrote Halloween with me in mind.
When he called me to do Halloween, he was like, “Well if you don't do it, I’m not gonna do it. I have a very specific idea of how I want to see it.” Then he explained it to me and it was just fantastic.
Ralph: That’s pretty cool, too.
Whether you love it or hate it, it looks like Tyler can be blamed/praised for being the driving factor in getting it made.
Tyler Mane has countless TV and Film credits, most notably in the horror and sci fi genres. His past work includes The Devil’s Rejects, X-Men, and Troy. He is best known for his portrayal as Michael Myers in the Rob Zombie remake of Halloween. He most recently appeared on the highly anticipated Netflix release, Jupiter’s Legacy.

]]>Zenescope’s co-founder Ralph Tedesco and newcomer Amber Curtis interviewed Jones live via their latest virtual convention. The trio chatted on St. Patrick’s Day regarding the impact of the film, their favorite cigars, and a vampire leprechaun crossover which might feature Davis!?
Here is an excerpt from the interview. You can view the entire interview here. Please fast forward to the 2:00 mark.
Ralph: How did the origin of Leprechaun happen? What was the antithesis or the beginning of that idea and how did it come about?
Mark Jones (MJ): I knew that they were making low budget movies and I figured as a first time director, that would be a good way to start. No studio is going to give a 20 million movie [to you] in those days.
They did Friday the 13th. They did Halloween. They did all these kind of movies, with these Holidays like the Santa Claus. [No] one has done St. Patty’s Day or a leprechaun. And those ‘Lucky Charms’ commercials were always playing and I was at a bar with my secretary. And I said you know no one had done a horror movie about a leprechaun. [People] think they are cheery happy creatures. They have sort of a dark past if you look into the mythology. [That] would be great. No one has done it. And they could release it every St. Patty’s Day.
So I wrote it. Got it to TriMark. [They] turned it down twice. The ole typical Hollywood story. Two executives turn it down. The head guy...saw the script, liked the title, read it and said, “Let’s make it.”
And then the two executives that turned it down, talk about it to this day. How great it was; how they got it going.
Ralph: And then they pushed it along.
MJ: Yeah, yeah. One of them I’m still friends with and he knows who he is.
Ralph: At least you’re still friends.
MJ: I’m friends with everybody.
Amber: I mean I would be friends with you all the time if we just smoked cigars.
Ralph: I want to talk about casting and Warwick Davis in particular. I know he had done Willow in the ‘80s. And then you got him on board. Was that someone you set out to attach to the film or was he someone who auditioned?
One that we almost got made? A Leprechaun gets bitten by a Vampire and becomes a Vamprechaun. It’s a really good script.
MJ: I saw Willow and I liked it. Lucas [film] did and that’s a big movie. A guy like that isn’t going to be into a low budget movie. My casting director set out for little people to read. And a lot of guys read.
My casting director said, [Davis] is in England and I talked to his agent and he’ll read the script. So we sent it out. He read it and in his book he mentioned it was very unfortunate he and his wife Sam had just had a child who passed away after a week. They were very depressed and he said he got the script and I read it and really liked it.
[He] thought about going to LA just to get away so [he] could have good therapy. So it just came for the right time for him. He liked the comedy and wanted to do comedy horror.
Amber: Kinda following up on the casting, obviously this is Jennifer Aniston’s feature film debut, did you see her in Leprechaun instantly or were there other people that you saw as Tori?
MJ: I’ve said this story and it’s really true.
[My producer and I] were reading young pretty girls and we saw maybe 80 of them and Jennifer was just one coming in, really hadn’t done anything...couple little parts.
And she walked in the room [she] did have a charism.
I bumped into her a few times since she became [a star] and she was wonderful. We sat down and had a drink at an event, about four years into Friends….We spent about an hour talking and I remember she said to me, “You know whatever you hear I say about Leprechaun, that’s an exaggeration and she was apologizing...I said Jennifer, you don’t have to apologize. If I ever have the success that you have, I’ll deny I ever directed Leprechaun. Haha.
Amber: Mark, what other projects do you have in your pipeline, if any, that you would like to talk about
MJ: I have one that we almost got made. It’s called a Leprechaun gets bitten by a Vampire and becomes a Vamprechaun. It’s a script. A really good script. We had a green light and then a lawsuit, we won, but now the funding fell out...and Warwick, at one point, wanted to do it...so that’s a secret, but he wanted to wait until his kids got older before he did a horror movie again...so that might come about.
We’ll let’s keep all praying and hoping for another Davis appearance as Leprechaun and a much anticipated sequel.
Leprechaun was released in 1993 as TriMark’s debut film. The film features Willow and Star Wars alum Davis and the film debut of Aniston. Since its release almost 30 years ago, Leprechaun has spawned multiple sequels, an origins story, and a recent reboot release by SyFy in 2018.

Since I was old enough to shave my legs, I have been terrified of cutting them with a razor. And once I was finally allowed to see Eli Roth’s spring break horror-comedy debut, I was scarred (pun intended.)
The infamous leg shaving scene in Cabin Fever was perfected by Cerina Vincent almost 20 years ago, yet it still has teens double guessing their Spring Break plans as well as shaving their legs.
Zenescope’s co-founder Ralph Tedesco and newcomer Amber Curtis chatted live with Cerina Vincent on Day 1 of their Spring Break Virtual Convention. They dove into the stigmas around nudity, how she’ll always love Cabin Fever, and her journey into motherhood including her podcast, Raising Amazing.
Here is an excerpt from the interview. You can view the entire interview here:
Amber: Everytime I mention the film, people always go “Oh My God. That leg shaving scene. I can’t even watch it.” Take me through the scene and do fans usually bring [this particular] scene up to you?
Cerina: The leg shaving scene. When I read it in the script, I was like holy sh**. I get to do this. That’s so rad. What a crazy scene. I couldn’t imagine how it was all going to play out.
Of course it seems, the biggest scenes in the movie and the things you are most nervous about, you have five minutes to accomplish. It was pushed to the end of the day, [around] four in the morning. We had to wrap and rush the effects and it wasn’t a real bathtub. Just a bathtub in the middle of the soundstage. So [it’s hard] to find the emotion, while you’re sitting in freezing cold, dirty water half naked.
I kept feeling like, “Oh God. I have to get this right.” There is a lot to unveil like the prosthetics and blood at the right time. But by the time it goes through editing and sound, it came out amazing and I’m super proud of that. It takes a village.
Amber: You were coming off a very well-known role in Not Another Teen Movie. And for those who don’t know, (but I’m sure they do know), you were naked for that entire role. I know you spoke about this in the documentary Skin: A History of Nudity in the movies, but what kind of stigma were you fighting at the time.
Cerina: It was the funniest script I ever read. It was a big decision. I auditioned for it. I actually turned it down. I didn’t think I could do it. I wanted them to give me another role that wasn’t nude. When you’re 12 years old in theater, you don’t think in ten years I’ll have to do something like this for a role. It just hadn’t come up in my career yet.
So it went away. And they hired someone else for the role and it didnt work out. So they came back to me. And I was 21 and I did it. So I prepared my family for it and myself for the shoot.
But I wasn’t prepared for the judgement afterwards and the criticism - You put your body out there and it was this open forum for everyone to walk sh**...it was really offensive to me about people saying I had a bad boob job when my boobs were real.
At the time I didn’t know how to articulate or manage those feelings, the attention.
Ralph: Thank God there wasn’t social media back then.
Cerina: Yeah, but it was still all over my IMDb. And I was getting a flood of offers for nude roles. And I only wanted to do it if it was for an amazing role.
Amber: Body empowerment has come such a far away and I think that's what the documentary touched upon and you're an icon in that... you jogged, walked, maybe crawled so other people could now just open.
It's such an empowering role what you did. Not Another Teen Movie has got to be one of the greatest spoof movies of all time. I read a lot that went into the movie Cabin Fever and I know that you fought a lot for some of the nude roles that were happening there and I'm like “this girl is amazing!” I love that!
Cerina: Oh you mean the inch of -
Amber: The inch of the butt, yeah.
Cerina: The people don't know that story. He wanted on the scene where the love scene with writer Strong he wanted to see my whole butt and I was like “no.” This is all pre-negotiated before you get on set in the con. I was like “no” I'll give you an inch. That's what I said.
I'm on set and I need to take my tape measure and measure an inch. But thank you for saying that, that was also.. you know we've also just as a society I feel like come a long way and like curves are in and I just can be perfectly honest I was hungry back then. Heroin chic was in back then...right? Everybody had to be super skinny.
Ralph: Oh sure.
Cerina: And it's not like that anymore, which is really cool. I had a full-on eating disorder and I was battling my own issues with body image and feeling comfortable in my own skin. [Plus] the judgment on top of that. It was hard to manage.
Well now at 42, I'm like “oh it was like what was so insecure about?” you know?” I looked great and I want every 20 some year old woman to feel beautiful in their skin and 40 some year old women to feel beautiful in our skin.
Life's too short to hate our bodies or have regrets.
Amber: So you just launched a new podcast and I listened to it and it’s amazing. It has five out of 5 stars on Apple podcasts. This is the first podcast of its kind where you team up with a doctor and you talk about raising kids and basic stuff that parents need to know. How did the podcast come to be?
Cerina: I wrote a book that hasn’t been published yet. And I needed a doctor’s stamp of approval on it. So maybe I’ll give it to [my son’s]. He not only read it, but he gave me a quote for the book and then said, “Hey we should start a podcast.”He’s like we should start a podcast and I was like,” yeah right. I Have nothing to offer parents. I’m a new mom.” And he was like,”No that’s the point.”
So as long as I frame it like that. We’re going to have the best doctors and experts on the show, so I can learn and then learn along with all the parents. I can do this.
It has been amazing. It has been so fun. I have learned so much. It’s called Raising Amazing. You can listen to it and find it wherever you listen to podcasts. We have tons of celebrities coming on and everyone has been honest and open and authentic.
Cerina Vincent has countless TV and Film credits including Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Cabin Fever, and Not Another Teen Movie. She co-wrote the best selling The Hot Chick series, which continues to pioneer against the battles females face inwardly. She recently launched Raising Amazing, a podcast where Dr. Gator and her share raw, heart-warming stories and advice about raising a child.
