Everything Zen is BACK!! Help us spread the word.

, by Sarah Houghton, 4 min reading time

Greetings and Salutations.  Thanks so much to everyone who shared their favorite Brendan Fraser movie as part of the Mystery Envelope raffle in my last post.  I'm happy to hear so many of you are also delighted with his career resurgence!

I wish I had Mystery Envelopes for all of you, but alas there can only be one winner and, drum roll, that person is...  Miguel Gutierrez!!  Congratulations Miguel, and thank you for supporting us!

And heads up, everyone will want to read to the end for another giveaway opportunity!

If you're anything like me and Frank Reynolds, you love a good podcast.  As an old-time radio enthusiast, I'm pretty hype this form of entertainment is making a comeback.

A lot of my old-timey faves are pretty easy to track down out there on the interwebs, if you too share an affinity for vintage media.

Orson Welles was an absolute giant of radio, theater, AND film.  (Incidentally, he's also the inaugural inductee into Sarah's Hunk Hall of Fame.)  His most renowned radio moment was of course, Mercury Theatre on the Air's infamous production of War of the Worlds, broadcast live on October 30, 1938.  Also well worth a listen is this playlist featuring some other iconic radio performances on programs like The Black Museum, Suspense, and The Lives of Harry Lime.

I've mentioned Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar before, and it is well worth a listen if you like hard-boiled noir about... possible insurance fraud!  That's right, Johnny Dollar is an insurance investigator and each episode finds Johnny narrating the events of his investigation, along with a breakdown of his expenses.  The most important takeaway here is that you MUST listen to the episodes starring Bob Bailey.  He was the very best Johnny, and here is a handy 11 hour playlist of some of his best episodes.

And if you'd rather listen to some content produced in the 21st century, good news - I have a few ideas!!

Since I am a sucker for both improv comedy and musical theater, Off Book: The Improvised Musical Podcast is my holy grail of podcasts.  Zach Reino and Jess McKenna improvise a musical, frequently with a guest, and they are all 100% masterpieces that should be on Broadway.  It's silly, and also charming, and also clever, and also perfect in every way, and also my favorite thing in the whole world.  Highly recommend.

Comedy Bang Bang is a titan of comedy podcasts.  Scott Aukerman hosts weekly episodes that feature a slew of comedy greats chatting and - shockingly - riffing & improving.  Everyone from Zach Galifianakis to Jason Alexander to Bob Odenkirk have guested.  My personal favorite regular is Mr. Paul F. Thompkins, but let's also give a shout out to one of my current Top Hunks, Jason "Heynong Man" Mantzoukas.

Speaking of Zenescope Magazine's 2023 Sexiest Man Alive, Zouks is one of the hosts of another favorite podcast, How Did this Get Made, which is a perfect listen for those of us who love Mystery Science Theater 3000 and/or making fun of (maybe?) lovably terrible movies.  Jason, Paul Scheer, and June Diane Raphael walk us through a movie of questionable quality, some obscure and some suuuuuuper famous.  The Con Air ep is one of my faves.

In case you missed it last week, my good buddy Mark released a double dose of new episodes to kick off the re-launch of our podcast, Everything Zen, Vol. 3!!

And friends, lemme tell ya, it was worth the wait!  Mark interviews Emily Swallow, a.k.a. The Armorer from a little show you may have have heard of - The gosh darn Mandalorian!!!!

We're so proud of Mark's work on the podcast, and it would mean the world to us if you would share Episode 1 with your friends and followers on social media.  We'd be so grateful, in fact, that if you send a screenshot of your share to info@zenescope.com, we'll provide a code you can redeem on our webstore for a FREE MINI ART PRINT by Sun Khamunaki!

I'll be back on Friday with a bonus post.  As always, thanks for being the best group of folks we could ask for!!

  • Ooh, that Sun mini-print looks amazing and thanks for sharing the Off Book podcast. That sounds right up my alley as a Broadway fan (as a fellow Swiftie was there any question?) so will have to check it out!
